Evidence-Based Concussion Prevention and Management in Athletics/ Effective Safety Assessment and Return-to-Play Strategies

  • Concussion injuries pose a risk to athletes of all ages and all levels of participation. The media and legislative exposure concussion injuries have received in the recent past, necessitates the need for all healthcare professionals dealing with these injured athletes to re-evaluate and revitalize their strategies for prevention and management of the injury. Athletic trainers should follow a comprehensive concussion assessment and management strategy based on objective, quantifiable testing and best practices for emergency action planning, return-to-play decision-making, and supervision and administration of athletic healthcare services. A comprehensive assessment and management strategy reduces concussion risk and promotes recovery among athletes of all ages.

Evidence-Based Emergency Action Plan for Safer Sports

  • A basic tenet of emergency planning is the EAP. The coordination of coaches, administrators, athletic trainers, and physicians is important to provide the best plan possible in the event a catastrophic accident occurs. The basics of the EAP and associated equipment must be reviewed. The components of the EAP include development of venue specific EAP. Many practices fail to regularly review and update EAPs and often lack venue-specific EAPs.


Evidence-Based Provision of Medical Services for Collegiate and HS Programs

  • Athletic healthcare involves care (individual patient care, rehabilitation, etc.) and coverage (supervising practices of traditional and nontraditional seasons). Models being explored today are moving healthcare providers from an athletic department supervisory role to a healthcare model within appropriate medical units within the university, including student health centers or medical schools. The importance of healthcare is also referenced in recent litigation filed by plaintiffs and the introduction of state statutes in all fifty states addressing concussion and mandatory steps for appropriate return-to-play decisions. As recent as 2014, healthcare initiatives have again been discussed as threats of student-athlete unionization, law suits over poor concussion management and care, concerns over limits of coverage of accidents secondary to athletic participation, the impending impact of the Affordable Care Act, etc. have all created the perfect storm for healthcare reform and review of programs.

Evidence-Based Assessment of Hamstring Injuries, Appropriate Intervention and Effective Prevention Strategies

  • Summarize the physiological response of healing to hamstring strains.
  • Discuss the incidence of hamstring strains and the resulting influence on sport participation.
  • Discuss the importance to assess lengthened-state hamstring muscle for weakness.
  • Design and implement a rehabilitation/prevention program consistent with prevention techniques for hamstring muscles.
  • Understand eccentric hamstring exercise in a lengthened state.

Course Overview
The course is a lecture style course that reviews pertinent anatomy of the hamstring and associated areas.  There is also an overview of exercises associated with post-injury rehabilitation and physiological basis of treatment to the hamstring injury.  The rehabilitation includes introduction the extended state hamstring exercise and return to play progression.
